Tips to Keep Your Cool in Summer
- Set your thermostat as high as is comfortable
- Less difference between inside and outside temps, equals lower cooling costs
- Use a programmable thermostat
- Adjust settings at night or when unoccupied
- 78°F or higher
- Do not set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you first turn on your air conditioner
- Colder setting does not cool your home faster
- Results in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense
- Shade your windows
- Sunny windows make air conditioner's work two to three times harder
- Close curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the day
- Install white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house
- Apply sun-control or other reflective films on south-facing windows
- Do not place lamps or TVs near your air conditioner thermostat
- Heat from electronics will cause the ac air conditioner to run longer
- Have your home's system cleaned and checked once a year
- Clean or replace filter every 30 days or per manufacturer's recommendations
- Make sure registers are open and unobstructed by furniture
- If you have a whole-house humidifier, make sure the damper is in the Summer position
Routinely replacing or cleaning the filters in your HVAC unit will help your air conditioner operate smoothly. Clogged or dirty filters block normal airflow and can reduce a system's efficiency over time. In addition, take a walk around your yard.
If trees or other plants shade your home, make sure that leaves and sticks are regularly cleared away from your air conditioner.
