With everything from snow to ice to freezing rain, the winters here in the St. Louis area can get pretty harsh. And when you think about your air conditioner's condenser unit sitting outside through it all, you might be worried about keeping it protected. But is there really any cause for concern? Today we're going to talk about how air conditioners handle the winter months and whether or not you need to do anything to winterize your system!
Although it's understandable that you might be worried about your air conditioner sitting outside during the winter months, there's really no cause for concern! That's because air conditioners are designed to handle harsh winter weather, and your condenser unit does a great job at toughing it out when the weather is cold, wet and/or snowy. Although there are some things you can do to help maintain it this winter (as you'll see below), your condenser unit is built to withstand most of what Mother Nature puts it through during the cold months of the year.
The best thing you can do to take care of your air conditioner this winter is to check on your condenser unit periodically to see how it's doing. Snow and debris can build up around your outdoor unit, and you can help protect it by keeping the area within a few feet of your unit clear. If you happen to notice any signs of damage, be sure to give Jerry Kelly a call!
Although air conditioner covers might sound good in theory, they can actually do more damage than good. That's because a cover can allow moisture to build up and damage the inside of your unit, and small animals often try to use the covers as shelter from the cold. As we mentioned above, your air conditioner is designed to handle the winter weather, and simply keeping an eye on your unit will do more than enough to ensure it is protected all season long.
