With summer in full swing, we here in the St. Louis area have already used our air conditioners quite a bit this year. But do you know if your air conditioner is working at its maximum performance levels to keep your home as comfortable as possible? To help you get it there, today we’re going to provide you with some tips for how to maximize your air conditioner’s performance this summer!

How to maximize air conditioner performance this summer

  • Don’t skip out on a tune-up. If you haven’t already received an air conditioner tune-up this year, schedule one as soon as you can. This is the absolute number one thing you can do to maximize your air conditioner’s performance this year. During your tune-up, we’ll take care of any possible issues with your system that could impact its performance and ensure that your air conditioner is in the best shape possible to keep your home cool.
  • Know when to replace your system. On average, your air conditioner will last somewhere around 15 years. As your A/C gets close to (or surpasses) that age, it will begin to suffer from some performance issues that simply can’t be fixed due to the system’s age. Check out this post to learn how to know when to replace your system.
  • Change your air filter. Your air conditioner cannot perform to the best of its abilities if it’s running with a dirty air filter. That’s because a dirty filter will block your system’s airflow and put extra stress on several different components. Be sure to check and/or change your filter every single month.

  • Make sure all of your vents are open and clear. Cool air is only useful if it can get into your home’s living spaces. Walk around your home and ensure that every one of your floor vents is fully open and not obstructed by chairs, couches, or other furniture.
  • Utilize your ceiling fans. Along with creating a nice wind-chill effect, your ceiling fans will help distribute cool air around your rooms. This will help maximize the usefulness of the conditioned air that your air conditioner provides.
  • Occasionally check on your condenser unit. Every couple of weeks, take a walk to the side of your house and check on your condenser unit. Remove any twigs, leaves, or other debris that may have gotten caught on it. If any plants or bushes have grown within a few feet of the unit, trim them up so that your air conditioner has more room to breathe.
  • Use a comfortable thermostat setting. Although energy-saving thermostat settings are great, you don’t have to sacrifice home comfort to achieve them. If you’re going to use your air conditioner, you might as well be comfortable! Take a look at this post for suggestions on how to find the best energy-saving thermostat temperatures for your home.
