Do you have a one-bedroom in your home that never seems to cool properly? This can be extremely uncomfortable, especially when you’re trying to sleep well through the night. As it turns out, there are several reasons why individual rooms don’t cool properly. So today we’re going to help answer the question, “Why do I have the hottest room in the house?” and explain what can be done to make your room more comfortable!

Why do I have the hottest room in the house?

  • Unlucky location. Most often, the hottest rooms in a house are located in a part of the home that is simply difficult to keep cool. If your room is located on an upper level and your thermostat is located on the main floor, for example, your thermostat will likely tell your air conditioner to turn off before the upper level cools down properly. The only way to truly fix this problem (aside from lowering your thermostat to an uncomfortable level for everyone else in your house) is to install a zoning system (see below).
  • Windows are adding heat. Do you have a bedroom with a lot of windows? This can be great for adding a lot of natural light, but it can also make it difficult for your room to cool down properly. Windows allow heat from the sun to get into your room, which will raise its temperature. You can help prevent this by closing your shades during the day. In addition, windows can develop air leaks that allow cool air to escape and warm outdoor air to get into your room. Adding caulk and weatherstripping to your windows will help keep them tightly sealed.
  • Registers blocked or not open. If the air registers in your room are blocked by furniture or closed completely, the cold air won’t be able to be distributed properly in your room. Make sure that all of your room’s registers are open and that there is nothing in their way.

Install a zoning system for the most effective solution

A zoning system is a perfect solution for controlling the temperature in parts of your home that are difficult to keep cool. With a zoning system, you can give your room (or that section of your house) its thermostat. This will allow your room to be cooled independently from the rest of your home, which allows your room to stay comfortable without sacrificing the comfort of everyone else in your family.
